ピチカート・ファイヴ「東京は夜の七時」が1993年12月1日の発売から30周年だそうだ。
その情報を知り当時のことを急に思い出した。曖昧な部分もあるが記憶をたどろう。
事前にSTUDIO VOICE の連載で次のシングルの名前は「東京は夜の七時」ということは予告されていた。矢野顕子の「東京は夜の7時」からタイトルを引用していることも書かれていた。
ウゴウゴルーガ2号の主題歌としてサビだけ聴くこともできたが効果音でごちゃごちゃしているうえに当時のテレビの音響だとピンと来なかった。
当時、浪人生だった自分は予備校の帰りに松戸でシングルを購入。自宅まで常磐線で一時間。歌詞カードを繰り返し読んだ。予備校仲間にジャケットデザインの素晴らしさを語り（理解されなかったが）購入したのに聞くことのできないむず痒い時間を過ごした。帰宅したら夢中になって何度も聴いた。
1994年1月14日「かがやけ！ウゴウゴヤングかようさい」の生放送の日。ピチカート・ファイヴが歌うことが朝の新聞広告に乗っていた。野宮真貴の写真に「←この人が歌います」と落書きがされている広告だった気がする。その日にテレビで初めて動くピチカート・ファイヴを見ることができて興奮した。
PVを見ることができたのはもっと後だ。当時はどうやってPVを見ることができるかもわからなかった。唯一見ることができたのがボウリング場。つくばボウルでボウリングをする時にジュークボックスの映像版のようなものにお金を入れるスコアが出ているブラウン管にPVを一回流すことができた。待ち望んだMVのVHS「readymade TV volume one」は1994年7月21日発売。音楽を聞いてから半年後にやっと映像を楽しめた。
1994年10月1日発売のアルバム「オーヴァードーズ」でついにアルバムに収録されたが、歌詞も違う10分越えの1年後バージョンになっていてまた興奮した。
気がつけばこの一曲だけで一年楽しませてもらえたのだ。
当時は子供だったからわからなかったが、1993年に待ち合わせたレストランはもう潰れてなかったのはバブル崩壊のためだろうし、その日に会えずに1年間連絡が取れないのも男が雲隠れしたせいかもしれない。
それから数年後に上京し、嘘みたいに輝く街は探してもどこにもなかった。
何も知らぬまま田舎で聴いた「東京は夜の七時」
僕の頭の中にだけある東京の幻想と共に今でも流れ続けている。
Pizzicato Five’s “The Night Is Still Young” is celebrating its 30th anniversary since its release on December 1, 1993.
When I learned this information, I suddenly remembered what I was doing back then. Some parts are a bit vague, but I’ll try to recall them.
It was announced in advance in a series of articles in STUDIO VOICE that the name of the next single would be “The Night Is Still Young” (Tokyo wa yoru no shichi ji). It was also mentioned that the title was taken from Akiko Yano’s “Tokyo wa yoru no shichi ji”.
I could hear only the chorus as the theme song of Ugo Ugo-Ugo-Ruga No. 2, but it was cluttered with sound effects and the TV sound system of the time didn’t make sense to me.
I was a ronin student at the time and bought the single in Matsudo on my way home from prep school. It took me an hour to get home on the Joban Line. I read the lyric card repeatedly. I talked about the wonderful jacket design to my prep school friends (they didn’t understand me) and spent an itchy time not being able to listen to it even though I had bought it. When I got home, I listened to it over and over.
January 14, 1994 “Kagayake! It was the day of the live broadcast of “Ugo Ugo Young Kayosai. Pizzicato Five was to sing on the morning newspaper ad. I think the ad had a picture of Maki Nomiya with the words “←This person will sing” scribbled on it. I was excited to see the Pizzicato Five in action for the first time on TV that day.
It was much later that I was able to see the music video. At the time, I didn’t know how to see the music video. The only place I could see them was at a bowling alley. When bowling at Tsukuba Bowl, I put money in a kind of video version of a jukebox and was able to play the PV once on the CRT where the score was displayed. The long awaited VHS of the music video, “readymade TV volume one,” was released on July 21, 1994. Six months after hearing the music, I could finally enjoy the video.
It was finally included on the album “Overdose” released on October 1, 1994, and I was excited again because it was a year later version over 10 minutes with different lyrics.
I found myself entertained for a year by this one song alone.
I was a kid at the time, so I didn’t know, but the restaurant where we met up in 1993 was no longer in business, probably because of the bursting of the bubble economy, and the fact that we didn’t see each other that day and didn’t hear from each other for a year might be because the guy went into hiding under a cloud.
I moved to Tokyo a few years later, and the city shining like a lie was nowhere to be found when I looked for it.
I heard “The Night Is Still Young” in the countryside without knowing anything about it.
It is still playing in my head, along with the fantasy of Tokyo.
